A comparison between AI versus Human Facilitation in the Two-Way Radio Communication Model?

A comparison between AI versus Human Facilitation in the Two-Way Radio Communication Model?

To start off this discussion, let us look at a revolutionary feature of a cellphone. By now we have all heard of `SIRI`, the virtual personal assistant that can respond to your commands and fulfil your instruction within the context of what it has been programmed to do. This form of Artificial Intelligence (AI), never takes consequential actions independently, and it is ultimately the human that makes the decision first and foremost. The human is this ultimately able to conduct their intention at a more rapid, yet efficient pace through AI Support.

Is it time to transfer this type of technology to all makes of two-way radios (i.e. – portable and fixed)? After all, there are already systems in place in the Australian police for example, where AI facilitates the changing between radio channels simply by following the verbal instruction of the operator.

If we look at this proposal in a genetic type format, in other words applying to all disciplines that utilise two-way radios as part of their primary communication model, there is a definite merit to AI facilitating a more expeditious response every time. This is of course when we compare it to our current Human only interface for two-way radio communications. But surely where there are pro`s there also possibly be an equal number of cons?

Let`s take a more in-depth look at this AI proposal and weigh up its options:

AI Pro`s - Facilitation

AI Con`s - Facilitation

AI is expeditious and produces results at speed.

AI doesn’t always first think things through for any type of situation that could be faced, before coming up with a result.

AI is continually receiving updates.

AI does not grow with experience and requires human intervention to expand on its algorithm and database functionality.

AI is accurate.

AI doesn’t know how to forecast.

AI is advanced technology.

AI lacks a sixth sense which technology cannot support.

AI is constantly receiving internal upgrades to boost its anticipated service offering.

AI needs constant monitoring to ensure that it is working accurately.

Now what about the communications itself. We currently living in a Metaverse where everyone now has the option of creating their own Avatar. Could our Avatar do our radio work for us? Would this result in the most professional communications, across all disciplines, that we have ever had the privilege of experiencing? Lets now look at the list of related Pro`s and Con`s from a communications perspective to help us determine an outcome!

AI Pro`s - Communications

AI Con`s - Communications

AI delivers a clear concise voice.

AI is unable to express any form of urgency in their transmissions, unless prompted in advance by human intervention.

AI delivers radio telephony communication which is exactly according to published script.

AI cannot add any additional information to the published script if needed without the human intervention.

AI can supply any voice you want to represent your chosen Avatar.

AI lacks a sixth sense for any voice chosen.

AI is advanced technology.

AI can shutdown at any point and require a boost as part of its routine update.

AI can scan published documentation on Google to identify the correct communication protocol for RT.

AI needs a support structure to ensure that it scans the correct published information.

By reviewing these two tables as presented, we can ascertain that when we are referring to communications on a two-way radio, AI relies more on Human intervention, than the Human does in turn with respect to AI.

AI can however definitely improve many parts associated with two way radio communications, so maybe the Human should start noticing how AI goes about managing its role in society, and see how we can learn to improve our communications from an entity that was originally created by the Human anyway.

In conclusion I believe that the Human has actually proven to themselves, through the creation of AI intelligence, that they have known all along how to use the two way radio for communications, but that they have just started to doubt themselves more often over time. This has given rise to the AI model that cannot survive without the Human intervention in the first instance.

It is therefore safe to say that Two-way radio communications actually only requires three things to always have a positive outcome, namely your:

  • Focus,
  • Intention and lastly,
  • A common understanding of each situation as it presents itself.
