What is the purpose of the ELP Testing?

English Language Proficiency (ELP) tests are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to use Aviation English in routine and non-routine, situations that are safe and understandable. In Aviation this test focuses on 06 holistic descriptors that are determined by ICAO as a benchmark to find a candidate competent or not. The test can be conducted either in person, or online following a prescribed series of questions that have been benchmarked against ICAO 9835, which is delivered by a qualified Interlocutor and then rated by a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and an English Language Expert (ELE). There are a prescribed number of Levels that will determine your achieved outcome which are measured on a scale of 01 to 06 of which `06` indicates the highest competency level, (Candidate never has to retest) and level 04 is the minimum requirement to be deemed Operational.
